The Department of Science and Technology’s Halal Research Ecosystem for Development and Innovation (DOST Halal REDI) Program hosted an onsite assessment plus training for Sunshine’s Breadmart which covered Halal concepts and principles, and Halal assurance and management systems.

This two-day activity aims to contribute to the advancement of Halal tourism in addition to fulfilling the DOST Halal REDI Program’s goal of strengthening human resources in Halal science, technology, and innovation (STI). More specifically, its purpose was to gauge Sunshine’s Breadmart’s readiness level for Halal certification while also capacitating and addressing the firm’s employees’ lack of knowledge and awareness on Halal to properly provide ample knowledge on the subject and by extension, the Halal food industry as a whole.

Halal or “permissible” food refers to food prepared according to Islamic dietary law. The term halal is usually used in food such as meat and beverages prepared the halal way. However, there it can also refer to other commodities such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, textiles, and others. (KJRGagajena/DOST VI-KMU)
