WVCIEERD, ASU develops marine transport data acquisition device

The Western Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (WVCIEERD) in partnership with Aklan State University (ASU) develops a low-cost mobile data acquisition system for small marine crafts.

The research study entitled “Design and Development of a Low-Cost Mobile Data Acquisition System for Small Crafts” or the SEAWAVES Project is funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). It is composed of two (2) parts: (1) Data acquisition system in a box; and (2) Web-based monitoring system. These systems are intended to acquire, record, and monitor data particularly of small marine crafts which can be used and studied by disaster risk reduction managers and other beneficiaries to improve maritime transport safety.

Recently, a two-day project monitoring and pilot testing was conducted by Prof. Julie Ann A. Salido, Project Leader, and Engr. Abraham A. Porcal and Ms. Renia R. Pionelo from DOST VI Research and Development Management Section.

The first day was marked with a coordination meeting with ASU-Kalibo Campus Director, Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin. Prof. Salido presented the summary of the project and objectives of preliminary testing to be conducted. Following this was a trip to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Sub-stations in Tabon and Boracay for project briefing and coordination.

The second day saw the actual testing proper of the device used for the project wherein various devices were deployed and synced with an app designed for the project. Through these, the team were able to gather data such as location coordinates and angles as well as notifications/warnings (yellow, orange, and red) for appropriate alert signals.(KJRGagajena/DOSTVI-KMU)
