DOST VI, Brgy Culajao inks MOA on oyster technology demonstration

DOST Regional Office No. VI through its Capiz Provincial Science and Technology Center (Capiz PSTC) and Brgy. Culajao, Roxas City, Capiz formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for a project entitled, “Technology Demonstration on Single-Shell Oyster and Post-Harvest Handling in Roxas City”.

Funded by the DOST VI Grants-in-Aid (GIA), the project will demonstrate the DOST-funded technology on growing single-shell oysters developed by Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) to the oyster growers along the Palina and Culajao river systems in Roxas City. Successful project implementation will improve practices in growing oysters, improve post-harvest handling practices of growers and traders, and improve overall quality of oysters being produced.

The project also involves monitoring of microbiological quality of water and oyster meat wherein data acquired from this can be used to design and develop a mollusk post-harvest treatment system. It can also raise awareness of the growers and the community about the condition of the environment and the profile of oyster meat in the area.

The project will be implemented by Brgy. Culajao with participation from the Palina River Development Association Inc. (PARIDA) and the Katunggan sa Culajao Salbaron Association, Inc. or (KACUSA).

Representing the parties during the signing were Brgy. Culajao Chairman and Project Leader Mr. Floyd De Jose, Brgy. Secretary Ms. Cherryl Azares, KACUSA representative, Ms. Elezandra Almeida, and the Provincial S&T Director of Capiz Ms. Juafe M. Abareles.

In the same meeting, Ms. Abareles further discussed the implementation of the project such as submission of reports, timetable of the activities to be conducted, and advantages of adapting the developed technology by the SEAFDEC which is the growing of single-shell oysters using trays and net pouches. A total of Php1,448,148.80 was granted to Brgy. Culajao for the implementation of the said project. (KRJGagajena/DOSTVI-KMU)
