Pkg Prototypes turned over to CEST beneficiaries

Four teams consisting of BS Packaging Engineering majors from Central Philippine University (CPU) presented packaging prototypes for their respective Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) beneficiaries during a culminating activity and turn-over ceremony at Zuri Hotel, Iloilo City, June 14.

The teams were formed as part of a collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) and CPU via the former’s CEST program to provide packaging assistance to Western Visayan CEST communities’ developed products.

One of the teams worked with Canlandog Mountain Coffee by Canlandog Pilot Agro-Forestry Farmers Association (CPAFFA) from Negros Occidental. The team focused on the product’s roots when designing and presenting the prototype.

Another team was tasked to create a design for the Ready-to-Drink Calamansi Juice and Calamansi Concentrate by Tinadtaran Piña Agsanayan San Roque Agrarian Reform Cooperative (TPAS ARC) from Guimaras. Among the team’s challenges was to create packaging from an alternate material as the original polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles tend to deform as encountered by the client.

The next team presented their prototype for Bottled Bangus in Oil by University of Antique – Tario Lim Memorial Campus (UA-TLMC). The team came up with three themes – minimalist, classic, and festive – and presented alternative glass material for the prototype as well as cost analysis.

Lastly, the remaining team handled Kape Miro by Nagpana Minorities Association (NAMIAS) from Iloilo. Their designs focused more on Nagpana Falls plus the culture and heritage of the Aetas from the community. In addition, the team and their client made the joint decision to rebrand their product as Kape Nagpana.

Moreover, after the presentations and comments on the prototypes, CPU Packaging Engineering Department Head Engr. Bernie C. Cangrejo highlighted in his closing message how the collaboration served as an opportunity for the Packaging Engineering majors to learn and apply what they learned and that the students achieved the project’s goal in spite of the pandemic.
