Malnutrition is still prevalent in the country and 1/3 of the Philippine households are not able to afford a diet to meet the nutritional needs as reported in Philippine Summary Report of the World Food Programme. To address these issues, the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reformulated the Enhanced Nutribun or e-Nutribun. In celebration of the 2020 National Science and Technology Week in Region VI on December 2-3, DOST Region VI launched the e-Nutribun Technology.

The E-Nutribun technology adoptors are Waffle Time Inc. in Iloilo City, Bread Basket and Pastry Shop in Roxas City, Capiz and AJJJ Bakeshop from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. DOST VI is currently working on the technology licensing application of the six firms namely, Aklan State University (ASU) Bakeshop, Bread and Butter of Filbake Foods Corporation, University of Anitque (UA) Sibalum Technohub, Mang Tinapay, Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation, Inc. Quinos Café, and the Guimaras State College (GSC) Western Visayas Food Innovation Center (WVFIC).

The e-Nutribun is reformulated by DOST-Food and Nutrition Research institute (FNRI) from the original nutribun of the 1970s. This ready-to-eat bread is rich in protein, energy and enhanced with micro-nutrients, iron and Vitamin A. Tastier, softer with appetizing color and aroma. Each bun weighs approximately 160 grams and provides 32% calories, 59% protein, 60% iron and 60% of Vitamin A of the required energy and nutrient intake (RENI) for children.

The nationwide roll-out of Enhanced Nutribun also aims to provide livelihood opportunities to bakery workers, farmers as sources of raw materials like squash, and other related suppliers and service providers. Enhance Nutribun is ideal for children feeding programs and suitable for relief packs during calamities and emergencies. It can also be a better option for snacks for health-conscious individuals.

Interested technology adoptors of Enhanced Nutribun may contact DOST VI or its Provincial S&T Centers for more details. (SSalazar/DOST VI-KMU)
