In a significant progress towards advancing sustainable aquaculture practices, the Department of Science and Technology VI, through the Capiz Provincial Science and Technology Office, officially grants funding for the project “Technology Adoption of Single Shell Oyster and Longline Culture of Mussel in Brgy. Buntod and Brgy. Agojo, Panay, Capiz”.
The project, led by the Capiz Provincial Government-Provincial Agriculturist Office (CPG-OPA), was given support amounting to ₱2,401,901.00. This signifies a strategic partnership among the agencies aimed at ushering in sustainable aquaculture practices.
Focused on the localities of Brgy. Buntod and Agojo in Panay, Capiz, the project’s primary objective is to introduce environment-friendly technologies for the cultivation of single oyster and mussels using the longline method. As part of the project, a series of laboratory tests to monitor the growing areas will be conducted to assess the quality and safety of the harvested shellfish.
Moreover, the findings will contribute to formulating a comprehensive policy framework, safeguarding the integrity of the brackish river system and mitigating the potential risks of the oyster industry’s collapse in the province.
In the Philippines, oysters and mussels are two essential aquaculture fishery commodities with Western Visayas and Central Luzon as the major producers. The traditional method of growing oysters and mussels has resulted in siltation, adverse health consequences of using motorcycle tires, and subsequent declines in productivity. These insights highlight the need for innovative and sustainable approaches to shellfish cultivation that enhance productivity and prioritize the health and quality of the shellfish produced.
By extending these advancements to fisherfolks in identified areas, the project aspires to enhance their capabilities, promote ecological balance, and contribute to the overall development of aquaculture practices in the region. The collaboration reflects a commitment to fostering innovation, empowering local communities, and advancing the science and technology landscape in Capiz. (Capiz PSTO)
