The Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI), in collaboration with the Capiz Provincial Government-Provincial Agriculturist Office (CPG-OPA), launched an aquaculture-focused initiative aimed at uplifting the coastal communities of Brgy. Buntod and Brgy. Agojo in the Municipality of Panay, Capiz.
The project, titled “Technology Adoption of Single-Shell Oyster and Longline Culture of Mussels in Brgy. Buntod and Brgy. Agojo, Capiz” under the DOST’s Grants-In-Aid Program, targets to improve production efficiency, address environmental concerns, and ensure sustainable income for oyster and mussel farmers.

Fisherfolk were introduced to science-based technologies, including the single oyster pouch and tray method and the longline method for mussel culture. These methods replaced traditional farming practices which offer more sustainable and productive alternatives that minimize environmental impact while enhancing the quality and quantity of harvests.
To support adoption, experts from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) conducted technical lectures on oyster and mussel aquaculture, including environment-friendly farming practices and market opportunities. Fisherfolk were encouraged to explore value-adding activities to increase income.

A key message emphasized the harmful effects of outdated practices such as staking, which degrade water quality and shellfish health. Experts strongly recommended shifting to science-based approaches to protect natural resources and enhance productivity.
Moreover, the GIA project officially concluded with a closing meeting on June 18, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the community development efforts in Panay. It served as a platform to highlight project achievements, shared insights from implemented interventions, and discussed strategies to sustain its long-term impact.
Through this initiative, DOST VI and the LGU of Panay have laid the groundwork for continued progress, demonstrating the vital role of science and technology in building resilient, empowered, and future-ready communities. (LNGGebauer/CapizPSTO)
