Accurate weight matters, especially for the health and nutrition of learners.

Through the initiative “Timbang Sigurado: Scale Calibration for Schools,” the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) through DOST Guimaras, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Office (SDO) Guimaras, brought on-site calibration services to 86 out of 97 public elementary schools across the province.  A total of 100 weighing scales were calibrated by the DOST VI RSTL, ensuring that health measurements used in schools are reliable and accurate.

Weighing scales are essential tools for school clinics, not only for nutrition assessments but also for routine medical evaluations.  With properly calibrated equipment, school health personnel can make better-informed decisions when monitoring the growth and health status of students.

To support this effort, an orientation on applying corrections from calibration reports was also conducted for school nurses, dentists, and medical officers.  The session, led by Engr. John Lorenz D. Navales of the DOST VI RSTL Metrology Laboratory, who provided practical guidance on applying corrections indicated in calibration reports.

The initiative was well received, especially as schools prepare for the opening of SY 2025–2026, where accurate weight data will guide interventions for learner health and wellness.  This collaboration demonstrates how science and technology, when brought closer to communities, can make a real difference in everyday lives.
