Capiz-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have taken a step forward in enhancing their market presence through improved product labels, culminating in the official turnover of finalized label designs to the recipient MSMEs on April 11, 2025.
This was made possible by the Packaging and Labeling Assistance Program of the Department of Science and Technology VI (DOST VI) which was designed to support local enterprises by addressing their need for packaging and labels that comply with the requirements set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In 2024, DOST Capiz assisted 16 MSMEs through providing printed labels and expert consultations, including an orientation on the basic principles of packaging and mandatory labeling requirements and one-on-one sessions with DOST VI’s packaging experts. This process led to the development of customized label designs for various products, including baked goods, chips, wine, teas, and ready-to-eat Filipino dishes such as pork and bangus-clam sisig, among others. Thus, the culmination of the official turnover of the finalized label designs to the recipient MSMEs.

Ms. Juafe M. Abareles, Capiz Provincial Science and Technology Director, emphasized that proper packaging and compliant labels are vital not only for meeting regulatory standards but also for increasing the competitiveness and protection of MSME products in the market. She also highlighted the significance of conducting the focus group discussion focused on identifying the needs and requirements of stakeholders in line with DOST’s mandate. Insights gathered will help enhance the delivery of programs and services, ensuring these are more responsive and impactful to the local MSME sector.

Following the turnover of label designs, a brief overview of the assistance process was presented to initiate the focus group discussion. MSME beneficiaries then shared their experiences, highlighting ongoing challenges in labeling, packaging, and meeting regulatory requirements. These reflections offer vital input as a critical reference for the continuous improvement of the program, ensuring that DOST’s interventions remain responsive and aligned with the evolving needs of small local enterprises.
