Halal-accredited expert from the Department of Science and Technology 6 (DOST 6), Norjanah C. Barosa, discussed the key aspects of Halal Tourism held in Boracay, Aklan on March 14, 2025.
The Department of Science and Technology Aklan (DOST-Aklan) and the Department of Tourism Regional Office No. 6 (DOT-6) push for inclusive tourism in Boracay Island, Aklan by hosting a public training on Halal tourism to 20 DOT-accredited accommodation establishments.
The training, held on March 14 at Boracay Tropics Resort Hotel, was opened by the Office of Halal Tourism and Muslim Concerns Executive Assistant IV Isabelle Ann P. Biscocho with a discussion on Muslim-friendly Certification Overview. Speaking via Zoom, she specifically discussed the amended guidelines governing the operation and recognition of Muslim-Friendly accommodation establishments to ensure they can provide authentic and respectful services to Muslim guests.
Participants gained valuable insights into Halal food standards as DOST-6’s Project Technical Assistant II Norjanah Barosa detailed the guidance on the Halal concept and principles, Halal food preparation, and service.
Representatives from DOT-accredited hotels in Boracay participate in DOST and DOT initiatives toward a more inclusive tourist destination.
Following this, Project Technical Assistant I Shanon Naval introduced the services of the Central Philippine University (CPU) Packaging Technology Resource Center, showcasing how technology can further enhance food safety and presentation.
Moreover, Senior Science Research Specialist Joeben Gubatanga provided an orientation on DOST’s various programs and services, highlighting their relevance to the tourism industry.
DOT Boracay Field Officer Marc Maio Judicpa concluded the activity by emphasizing and reinforcing the importance of the training in positioning Boracay as a welcoming destination for all tourists.

DOT 6-Boracay Field and Compliance Monitoring Office’s Marc Maio P. Judicpa delivers his closing message reinforcing the importance of Halal and Muslim-friendly services in positioning Boracay as a welcoming destination for all tourists.
Emphasizing the importance of collaborative effort, DOST Aklan Provincial Director Dyna Rose Gubatanga stated, “We will focus on sustainable tourism practices and Muslim-friendly services, building on the lessons learned from Boracay’s rehabilitation efforts. This training is very timely as our Muslim brothers and sisters are currently observing the holy month of Ramadan.”
