The “Holistic Opportunities and People’s Empowerment (HOPE) in BJMP San Jose through CEST” project continues to create transformative opportunities for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the BJMP San Jose Antique District Jail. Since its launch in January 2024, the initiative has played a vital role in the rehabilitation, capacity-building, and socio-economic empowerment within the facility.

One of the key components of the project is the establishment of a bakery livelihood program, which provides bakery equipment and hands-on training in bread and pastry production. In partnership with the University of Antique – College of Industrial Technology, which led the training, 20 PDLs have been equipped with the skills to produce a variety of baked goods, including chocolate crinkles, pan, donuts, hotdog buns, kababayan mamon, piaya, pandecoco, ensaymada, pandeleche, and pandesal.

Beyond technical skills, this initiative fosters confidence, purpose, and hope within the PDL community. More than just an in-facility livelihood, the project opens doors for economic independence and reintegration into society. With the support of local institutions, the bakery’s products will soon be made available in school canteens, government cafeterias, and restaurants across Antique, ensuring a sustainable market for their baked goods.
Through this initiative, the DOST VI remains committed to inspiring change, bringing hope, and transforming the lives of PDLs through science, technology, and innovation. (EDBut/AntiquePSTO)
