Isla Gigantes fisherfolks undergo packaging and labeling seminar

The Iloilo Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) held a two-day seminar in line with the project “Technology Demonstration on Post-Harvest Processing (Scallops Value Adding) in Gigantes Island, Carles, Iloilo” of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region VI (BFAR VI) in partnership with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Fish Right and the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI).

Day one of the seminar dealt with packaging, kinds of packaging materials, development considerations, packaging innovations, basic package design tips, and FDA-compliant Philippine mandatory labeling requirements. Afterward, a workshop on mandatory labeling requirements was held on day two in order to test participants’ understanding of the previous day’s topics.
Scallop nuggets, scallop balls, and scallop lumpia were produced and evaluated (through acceptability tests) using refined technologies developed by UPV College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences – Institute of Fish Processing Technology (UPV CFOS IFPT), leading to reduced cost and longer shelf-life. Additionally, the DOST VI will provide packaging and label designs for the aforementioned scallop products so that the cooperative can expand its market reach nationwide. Moreover, a nutritional analysis of the products was also funded by USAID Fish Right. The products are already scheduled for analysis at the DOST VI Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL).
