CPU collabs with DOST project on pkg dev’t

The Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) via its Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST), joins hands with Central Philippine University’s (CPU) BS Packaging Engineering Department to provide packaging development assistance of products developed by various CEST communities throughout Western Visayas.

The primary objective of the collaboration is to help develop the appropriate packaging of products produced by the communities under the CEST Program. Both the technical aspect and market acceptability will be taken into consideration to ensure product quality and eventually expand their market reach.

An orientation for the said collaboration was held virtually through Zoom and was preceded by a Memorandum of Agreement inked by the DOST VI and CPU. In attendance were DOST VI personnel and students from CPU’s BS Packaging Engineering Department. As part of this collaboration, the students who took part were divided into teams with each of them being assigned a product from a CEST community to conduct product packaging development.

The teams formed comprise of Rerunts in charge of Bottled Bangus in Oil in Antique, Beorhtwulf in charge of Ready-to-Drink Calamansi Juice and Calamansi Concentrate in Guimaras, Innovatus in charge of Kape Miro in Iloilo, and Crewgated in charge of Canlandog Mountain Coffee in Negros Occidental.

Furthermore, the DOST VI reached out to CPU as they are the only Higher Education Institute (HEI) in Western Visayas offering a BS Packaging Engineering program. In addition, their curriculum includes Packaging Innovation and Development as one of the core subjects which can be instrumental in benefitting community-based enterprises assisted under the DOST CEST program.

As of this writing, the collaboration has already started and meetings with CEST communities and Provincial Science and Technology Centers (PSTCs) are being conducted virtually. Afterward, the CPU will conduct site visits with the assistance of DOST VI.

DOST VI acknowledges the successful collaborations and partnerships they made with CPU, particularly in the field of packaging development in the region. (JGagajena, DOST VI KMU)
