Guimaras State University’s (GSU) prototype research vessel named Voyager was set afloat during a soft launching activity held at MacArthur’s Wharf, Buenavista, Guimaras.
Hon. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and also the Chairperson of the GSU Board of Regents, attended the activity. Also present were Buenavista, Guimaras Mayor Samuel T. Gumarin, former GSC President Dr. Rogelio T. Artajo, Engr. Fedi Marie C. Lima from the DOST VI Guimaras Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO), and faculty and staff from GSU.
Voyager was constructed through funding support from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program under the project entitled, “Development of Prototype Marine Transport Trimaran Vessel” which is being led by Engr. Conrado S. Calumpita.
According to GSU President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño the project was conceptualized to provide safe transport for locals and travelers from Guimaras and Iloilo following the sea tragedy that happened in August 2019. With this, the current prototype will be used for the multiple sea trials to be conducted that will ensure the vessel’s viability for technology adoption and commercialization.
The soft launching of the GSU Prototype Research Vessel was one of the activities for GSU’s 55th Founding Anniversary and 1st University Week Celebration.
