Self-injury protocol and training for teachers tackled in WVHRDC’s February webinar
Dr. Ma. Pilar Charmaine Servigon-Malata, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs at the West Visayas State University (WVSU), presented her research titled “Self-Injury Protocol and Training for High School Teachers and Staff”” during the 2024 Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) February Webinar in partnership with the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) held on February 23, 2024 at 01:30 p.m. via Zoom Video Conferencing and Facebook Live.
In coordination with DOH and the Department of Education (DepEd), a total of 72 school teachers, guidance counselors, doctors, nurses, and other staff participated in the said project which aimed to develop a training module and conduct workshops in detecting, identifying and evaluating high school students engaged in self-injury, as well as in appropriately responding, managing and referring high-risk students to mental health experts.
Two hundred eighteen (218) participants from various member and non-member organizations of the consortium participated in the said activity which was moderated by Dr. Prof. Lerma L. Paris, a Professorial Lecturer at the College of Medicine of the WVSU.
With the surge of self-harm and suicide cases among young adults and a severe shortage of registered guidance counselors nationwide, Dr. Malata emphasized that trainings of guidance designates and other school staff is now crucial in schools. Currently, the proponents are looking into applying for grants with the provincial government and CHED to continue the project.
The WVHRDC will again hold monthly webinars from January to September 2024 to disseminate health research results to users of the information and to serve as a venue for knowledge sharing between WVHRDC member organizations through these monthly webinars. The webinars are scheduled on every last Friday of the month at 01:30 p.m. to 03:00 p.m.
