In exploring how to turn locally available bamboo into useful, marketable products, a training featuring the demonstration of making Bamboo ACTIVE Soap using activated carbon from native bamboo species was organized by the Department of Science and Technology Capiz (DOST Capiz). This initiative was part of the  project titled “Bamboo ACTIVE Ph: Activated Carbon Through Innovation for the Vulnerable Sectors and Entrepreneurs in the Philippines” of the DOST Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI).

The training, spearheaded by the FPRDI, equipped participants with practical skills and ideas for creating personal care items using innovative, science-backed methods where they took part in the entire process, gaining practical experience they can apply in starting small businesses or supporting community enterprises.

Participants from cooperatives and government offices expressed interest in adopting the featured technologies in their communities.

Many recognized the potential for developing livelihood initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable sectors, and showed keen interest in the application of bamboo extracts as natural pesticides in farming.

This training underscores the value of utilizing locally available, sustainable resources like bamboo to create livelihood opportunities that benefit both the economy and the environment.

Through offering practical skills and hands-on experience, this initiative enables communities to develop innovative products and adopt eco-friendly practices. These efforts support small businesses and community enterprises, promote sustainable agriculture, and contribute to the resilience and growth of local economies, ultimately improving the quality of life for vulnerable sectors and fostering inclusive development.
