To help address poverty and limited income opportunities in the Aglalana Indigenous Community, home to the Ati and Panay Bukidnon groups, a two-day training on Darag Native Chicken and Vegetable Production was conducted under the Community Empowerment Through Science and Technology (CEST) program of the Department of Science and Technology VI (DOST VI), through the project “SAGIP (Sustainable Agriculture and Guided-Education for Indigenous People): CAPSU Dumarao Community Initiative” in Dumarao, Capiz.

On April 11, 2025, Capiz State University Dumarao (CAPSU Dumarao) Satellite College conducted a lecture on vegetable production with Ms. Ness Marie Secretario and Ms. Jenny Aboniawan serving as their resource speakers, highlighting the importance of sustainable vegetable gardening not only as a reliable source of nutritious food but also as a viable means  of livelihood for the community. The lecture aimed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge needed to start and maintain productive and eco-friendly vegetable gardens including essential aspects of successful vegetable farming, including soil preparation, proper seed selection, effective planting techniques, organic farming practices, and integrated pest management.

On April 12, 2025, Dr. Maryneth B. Barrios, project leader, delivered an in-depth lecture on the production of Darag native chicken, a native poultry breed known for its resilience and high market value. Dr. Barrios focused on proper native chicken management, covering key topics essential for successful and sustainable poultry production and explained the basics of breeding techniques, including selecting healthy and productive breeders to improve the quality and quantity of future stock.

Moreover, participants also learned about feeding practices suited for Darag chickens at different stages of growth, emphasizing the use of locally available and cost-effective feed options to reduce production costs.

Members of the Indigenous Peoples Community, along with representatives from Capiz State University Dumarao Satellite College and the Department of Science and Technology Region VI-Capiz, came together for a photo opportunity.

The two-day training introduced science-based practices tailored to the needs of the Ati and Panay Bukidnon communities. By promoting sustainable agriculture and innovative livelihood options, the activity empowered participants to pursue more secure and self-reliant futures. It also strengthened local capacity for science and technology-driven development. (LNGGebauer, MACGregorios/DOST Capiz)
