The Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) and Youth First Initiative Inc. (YFI) have been steadfast partners since 2020, working together to implement innovative and sustainable projects in Western Visayas. This year, their collaboration will focus on transforming the region’s startup ecosystem with two key initiatives: reinforcing DOST Innovation Hubs in the provinces and strengthening the FyrLab Acceleration Program.

The first initiative aims to provide support to the DOST Innovation Hubs in the provinces of Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras, empowering Provincial Science and Technology Offices (PSTOs) with expertise from YFI in the startup space. This will involve the conduct of various training, need-based assessments, and networking events such as Fyrside Chat, Fyrfest, and the CampFyr networking event.

Secondly, strengthening the FyrLab Acceleration Program will target early-stage startups to be investment-ready to venture capital (VC) funding. This initiative will provide them intensive mentorship and access to broader networking opportunities with industry experts, including lawyers, accountants, and investors.

These combined efforts are designed to create a steady pipeline of new startups, equipping them for successful investments and fostering a dynamic, interconnected entrepreneurial landscape across Western Visayas.

DOST VI and YFI officially formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) last February 18, 2025. This momentous event marks a significant milestone in strengthening collaboration and fostering mutual goals. It was attended by key representatives, including Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, CESO II, Regional Director of DOST VI, and Mr. Martin Ortiz, Chief Operating Officer of Fyrlab Accelerator. Their presence underscored the commitment of both organizations to fostering innovation-driven initiatives and supporting the startup ecosystem.

DOST VI believes that building a vibrant and sustainable innovation ecosystem is crucial for Western Visayas. With collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders, the region can solidify its position as a dynamic center for startups and innovation in the Philippines. (NGPorcal/IloiloPSTO)
