The DOST-led Accelerating Salt Research and Innovation Center (ASIN CENTER) under the Niche Centers in the Regions for R&D (NICER) Program brought together science, tradition, and innovation in Hoskyn, Jordan, Guimaras. A specialized training was conducted on the artisan salt industry and food safety standards to the Hoskyn Tultul Association (HOSTULA).

Tultul, also known as ‘dukduk’, is one of the rarest salts in the Philippines and an important part of Guimaras’ heritage. However, challenges such as climate change, urbanization, food safety, and an aging generation of salt makers threaten this tradition.

Through this initiative, the artisanal craft of ‘tultul’ making is not only being preserved but also enhanced—ensuring its cultural significance while integrating food safety and industry standards. Like salt that enhances and preserves our food, may we continue to protect and sustain the legacy of our local artisans. (PAUSambas/GuimarasPSTO)
