Transitioning from an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to a successful entrepreneur is no easy feat. But for Mr. Aben M. Ortega, it has been a journey of perseverance, innovation, and invaluable support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its Innovation for Filipinos Working Distantly from the Philippines (iFWD PH) program. Through this initiative, OFWs are provided with training, mentorship, and funding to set up successful businesses.

As a cooperator of the iFWD PH program, Mr. Ortega founded the Al Bin Packaging Services in December 2022. Al Bin Packaging Services produces muscovado sugar in sachets under the brand “Handums”. By enhancing its packaging, the brand gained its increased market appeal and competitiveness across various distribution channels. Through technology and innovation, “Handums” was created and is now widely available in the province of Antique.

Beyond business success, “Handums” represents Mr. Ortega’s dreams, sacrifices, and dedication to his hometown. With “Handums”, he is not only promoting Antique’s rich agricultural heritage but also helping create economic opportunities for local farmers and workers. These innovative muscovado sachets have gained widespread recognition and are now available in pasalubong centers in San Jose, Antique, key tourism sites, hotels, and restaurants across the province. Demand has also grown beyond Antique, with orders coming in from all over the Philippines. In a major milestone for his business, Handums has secured a contract with Gaisano Antique, expanding its market reach even further.

The journey of Al Bin Packaging Services proves that when passion meets innovation, great things can be achieved. Mr. Ortega’s story is an inspiration to fellow returning OFWs, showing that with the right support, training, and determination, they too can build thriving businesses and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
