On December 5, 2024, the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Committee (RRDIC) of the Regional Development Council (RDC) Western Visayas gathered at the Iloilo Convention Center to celebrate the outstanding contributions of researchers, scientists, and innovators at the 2024 Idlab Awarding Ceremony.

The Idlab Awards recognize exceptional individuals who have made significant strides in advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI), all while contributing to the socio-economic development of Western Visayas which perfectly aligns with the Regional Development Plan for 2023-2028 of fostering a vibrant STI culture within the region.

Seven exemplary figures in research and innovation were honored with the coveted Idlab Merit Award this year. The awardees are:

– Dr. Maryneth B. Barrios – Capiz State University

– Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols – University of the Philippines Visayas

– Dr. Rhea Joy D. Flora – Guimaras State University

– Dr. Renerio S. Mucas – Iloilo Science and Technology University

– Dr. Jescel B. Bito-onon – Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology

– Dr. Mae Flor G. Posadas – Central Philippine State University

– Dr. Anabelle E. Villaceran – State University of Northern Negros

These awardees represent the best of the region’s scientific and technological minds. Their innovations range from groundbreaking research in agriculture and fisheries to engineering, technology, and environmental sustainability advancements. Through their dedication and hard work, they have raised the standard of research and created practical solutions that benefit local communities, industries, and the broader society.

In his opening remarks, Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, the Chair of the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Committee and Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology Region VI emphasized the significance of these awards in reinforcing the region’s commitment to scientific progress and innovation. By recognizing the contributions of these trailblazers, the Idlab Awards serve as a powerful reminder of how science, technology, and research are integral to the region’s long-term development goals.

During the ceremony, members of the 2024 IDLAB Awards Technical Working Group were also recognized for their invaluable contributions throughout the conduct of the activity.

The keynote speaker, Atty. Dennis T. Ventilacion, also graced the event, on behalf of Hon. Arthur J. Defensor, Jr who highlighted that it is the passion and perseverance of researchers that will shape the future of Western Visayas. He elaborated that their contributions form the foundation for creating sustainable and resilient communities, with their research providing solutions to real-life challenges.

Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), highlighted the importance of the event in promoting innovation and local development through a video message. He recognized the Idlab Awardees for their exceptional contributions to their communities and the Western Visayas Region, showcasing the power of science and technology in driving regional progress.

Furthermore, Hon. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez, the Chair of the Regional Development Council Region VI and Mayor of Bacolod City, expressed that the Idlab Awards not only honors individual accomplishments but also motivates the next generation to view research, development, and innovation as essential drivers of progress.

The event brought together researchers, academics, government officials, and stakeholders in a powerful celebration of outstanding contributions to the fields of science, technology, and innovation (STI) underscoring the collaborative spirit of progress in Western Visayas

This year’s Idlab Awards serve as a testament to the region’s growing commitment to innovation and research excellence.
