The Department of Science and Technology – Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) conducts Science Journo Ako Goes to Aklan: Creating Engaging Science Stories through Multimedia Platforms for students from different schools in Aklan from July 25-26, 2024, at Ati-atihan Festival Hotel, Kalibo, Aklan.

The program was made possible through the combined efforts of Chief of the Communication Resources and Production Division Rodolfo P. de Guzman of DOST-STII, Provincial Director Dyna Rose G. Tibubos of DOST VI-Aklan Provincial Science and Technology Office (Aklan PSTO), Founder and Publisher of Boracay Island News Network (BINN) Jun Ariolo N. Aguirre, and Hon. Phillip Yerro Kimpo Jr., Councilor of the Municipality of Kalibo, Aklan.

The first day focused on lectures on Science News and Feature Writing led by de Guzman, Basic Principles of Photography and Photojournalism and Basic Principles of Design and Layout discussed by Rosemarie C. Señora, and Social Media Content Creation led by Allan Mauro V. Marfal.

On the second day, a field visit to Sunshine’s Breadmart, one of the DOST Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program 4.0 (SETUP 4.0) beneficiaries in Aklan, was conducted to see the production area and interview the owner, Mr. Joseph P. Fernandez. The visit aims to give the students first-hand experience creating science news and feature articles, capturing captivating images that tell or support a story, and producing relevant and engaging social media content.

The resource speakers together with Aklan journalists, Chita Dela Cruz-Heap, Maria Solita Guzman, and Giselle Toriano, reviewed the students’ outputs and gave comments and suggestions on how to improve. The two-day activity concluded with the awarding of Best in Science Feature Writing, Best in Photojournalism, and Outstanding Social Media Content.
