The National Academy of Science and Technology – Philippines’ (NAST PHL) and the Department of Science and Technology Region VII hold the 2024 Visayas Regional Scientific Meeting (VRSM) on May 27-28, 2024 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
With the theme, “Beyond Farm Productivity: Transforming the Philippine Food System to Address Equity, Consumer Health, and Environmental Issues”, the event was highly enlightening and led to potential resolutions that could significantly impact equity, consumer health, and environmental concerns, thereby revolutionizing the Philippine Food Systems. During the meeting, there was a discussion on the adoption of an ecosystem-based approach for the agricultural and fisheries sector, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various elements within these sectors, including environmental factors, biodiversity, and socio-economic dynamics. The potential influence of cutting-edge technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence, and the SARAI project on agriculture was also highlighted, stressing the need to incorporate these advancements into the operations of local government units and emphasizing the benefits for farmers through collaborative efforts between universities and national government agencies.
The VRSM is an annual event organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology-Philippines (NAST-PHL) as part of its long-standing commitment to bringing science closer to the people. It is expected to provide a venue for the discussion of relevant and timely regional concerns and the presentation of S&T-based recommendations.
Concluding the 2024 VRSM, DOST VII handed over the hosting of the next Visayas Regional Scientific Meeting (VRSM) to DOST VI. (HLCMaganto, AMIRoberto/DOSTVI-RDIMS)
