The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region VI in partnership with Capiz Aquaculture Producers Cooperative (CAPC) hosted a Technology Forum on Aquaculture in Roxas City, Capiz.
The forum intends to maximize the potential of the aquaculture and seafood industry in Capiz to enhance its economic development. The activity offered more opportunities to fisherfolks and entrepreneurs by introducing technological innovations in the aquaculture industry.
Resource persons during the forum were Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) Ms. Marinelle S. Espino, Ms. Irish E. Superio and Ms. Pedrita A. Caballero; Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative’s (NPPC) Head Chemist, Ms. Roselyn D. Usero; and DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Cristopher Marlowe A. Caipang. Each of them discussed their respective technologies, Espino on single-shell oyster technology, Superio on shrimp hatchery and grow-out operations, Caballero on Mangrove crab production, Usero on grow-out culture and management of Vannamei production, and Caipang on Biofloc technology on shrimp.
The participants visited the Capiz State University’s (CapSU) Pontevedra Fishpond and Miko Hechanova Ramos’ Farm as potential pilot testing sites. The sites will be further assessed for suitability in the culture of the different commodities using the technologies mentioned. The participants also visited the Agri-Aqua Laboratory of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist of Capiz where they could know different services they can avail of for free.
