DOST enables OFWs to venture into technology-based enterprises
In partnership with the Entrepinoy Volunteers Foundation, Inc. (EVFI), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regions II, VI, and XII successfully concluded the Batch Maunlad from seven regions for completing the Phase 1 of the iFWD PH: Innovations for Filipinos Working Distantly from the Philippines via teleconference.
The iFWD PH Program is being implemented by the DOST together with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Communities (OPAOFC) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to help OFWs in establishing their technology-based business and encourage them to settle in the country for good.
The recently completed Phase 1 or the Capacity Building, qualified OFW participants went through core business development trainings last May 4 to June 22, and submitted their Business Model Canvas which will assist them in establishing their own technology-based enterprises.
Sixteen participants from the Region VI received their certificate of completion for successfully completing the Phase 1. Other target technology-based enterprises assisted by DOST Region VI were Aquaponics Farm, Mushroom Processing, and Software Services using Blockchain Technology for Agriculture Sector, among others.
Mr. Perfecto Dequilla III from Iloilo City who currently works as an engineer in Saudi Arabia represented the OFWs from Western Visayas. He shared his learnings during the Core Business Development Sessions. He also stressed that he developed entrepreneurial mindset and gained self-development and values such as overcoming fears and pushing beyond the comfort zone.
The concluding ceremony was graced by Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, Regional Director of DOST Region VI and Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, Regional Director of DOST Region XII. Both Regional Directors expressed their solid support as they continue to assist the participants in starting their own business that will generate income and help the growth of the country’s economy locally.
Moreover, DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña and DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang also extended their appreciation and assured the participants for the continuous support in achieving their goals as they venture into technology-based enterprises.
