Two (2) public schools in Capiz are now equipped to spark curiosity and learning, receiving the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk System (STARBOOKS) digital kiosks and vital learning equipment through the Department of Science and Technology Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), DOST VI, and BPI Foundation, Inc.

Sinamongan Integrated School in Pilar, Capiz and Pagbunitan Elementary School in Sigma, Capiz are the recent beneficiaries of  this DOST initiative in aiming to improve access to science and technology learning materials, especially in geographically isolated and underserved communities.

STARBOOKS is a standalone digital library that provides thousands of curated science and technology resources without the need for internet connectivity. To support its implementation, the schools also received desktop computers, tablets, printers, scanners, tables, and chairs from DOST VI to help establish a more conducive learning environment for both students and teachers.

Turnover activities included an orientation on the STARBOOKS platform, along with demonstrations on how to access and navigate its features. Teachers were guided on how to integrate the digital library into their lessons, while participants were able to explore its offline resources. The orientation aimed to ensure that school personnel are equipped to maximize the use of the technology in support of classroom instruction and self-directed learning.

The activity highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening education. DOST Capiz Provincial Science and Technology (Capiz PSTO) Director Juafe M. Abareles shared that the project reflects the strong partnership between the government and private sector in promoting innovations at the grassroots level. Capiz DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Roel F. Bermejo expressed gratitude to the donors and emphasized DepEd’s mission to provide inclusive and equitable quality education.

By providing better access to digital content and learning tools, STARBOOKS helps close the digital gap and promote STEM learning. The combined support for educational technology and teacher training ensures that learners in these communities are better prepared to explore, discover, and thrive in a knowledge-driven world.
