In today’s energy supply and cost challenges, adopting renewable energy solutions has become a practical approach for enterprises aiming to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs, especially amid rising energy prices and supply constraints. Through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) 4.0 iFund, Bells Fiesta Inasal Inc. is among the firms advancing its operations by integrating solar-powered technology.
The firm installed a 10 kW single-phase, grid-tied solar power system, utilizing 19 units of 550 W photovoltaic (PV) panels to meet its operational energy requirements. The system powers DOST-supported equipment, including the band saw machine, reverse osmosis water treatment unit, and label printer, as well as other commissary operations. It also supports the firm’s additional cold storage units, eliminating the need to rent commercial freezing facilities and thereby reducing production costs while improving operational efficiency.
Since the installation in 2024, the firm has reduced its energy consumption from approximately 2,000 kWh to around 1,200 kWh. This reflects a substantial reduction of nearly 40% in electricity costs, translating to lower monthly expenses and improved overall profitability. However, these savings are partly offset by the continued addition of new commissary equipment.
“In times of economic difficulty and crisis that the country has experienced over the years, especially in the present, we in the business sector have found renewed hope and direction because of the unwavering support extended by DOST. Their programs have not only provided technical assistance but have also strengthened our confidence to continue operating, improving, and growing despite challenging conditions”, Mr. Gil N. Bayot, firm owner, shared.
By shifting to renewable energy, Bells Fiesta Inasal Inc. demonstrates how green technology can support cost efficiency while promoting environmentally responsible operations. This initiative highlights DOST’s continued support in enabling MSMEs to adopt sustainable and science-based solutions for long-term growth.
