The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Capiz assisted 65 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and provided 65 S&T interventions through a series of capacity-building trainings, equipping food handlers, manufacturers, and community stakeholders with essential knowledge on food safety, hygiene, sanitation, current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), and workplace organization.

The Capiz Sugar Central, Inc. requested a training on food safety and cGMP, reflecting its commitment to ensuring compliance with the safety and health standards in the sugar manufacturing business. The training reinforces their existing knowledge and practices on food handling, proper sanitation, personnel hygiene, hazard control, and the implementation of cGMP principles within their operations.

This was followed by a 5S Mastery for Capiz Gastronomy Tourism, which gathered members of the local slow food community and emphasized the importance of safe food handling, proper sanitation, and improved workplace organization to enhance service quality and reduce risks of contamination. One food handler participant expressed her gratitude, “Madamo gid nga salamat sa DOST kag PTCAO kay tungod sa sini nga training, madamo gid kami natun an nga makabulig sa amon para mas ma improve namon ang amon practices kag amon workspace”. [Thank you so much to DOST and PTCAO, because of this training, we learned a lot that will help us improve our practices and our workspace.]

The series concluded with the training on basic food safety and hygiene for Capiztahan merchants and vendors, in preparation for the province’s most anticipated festival on April 13 to 19, 2026. The training aimed to equip food merchants and vendors with fundamental knowledge on safe food preparation, personal hygiene, proper storage, and waste management. With the expected high volume of visitors on this year’s Capiztahan, DOST Capiz reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that food sold to the public is safe and of good quality.

By fostering a culture of safety and operational excellence, these initiatives underscore the DOST’s vital role in driving local economic resilience. The integration of science-based interventions ensures that MSMEs are not only compliant with global standards but are also prepared to deliver high-quality experiences. Moving forward, DOST Capiz remains a steadfast partner in empowering Capizeño entrepreneurs to turn rigorous safety standards into a hallmark of the province’s flourishing food industry.
