The path from the life of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to that of a flourishing agripreneur is rarely a straight line; it is a rigorous test of one’s discipline and capacity to evolve. For Mr. Chester A. Coronica, however, this transition has been defined by perseverance, a deep-rooted love for his community, and the invaluable support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its Innovation for Filipinos Working Distantly from the Philippines (iFWD PH) program.

Through this initiative, OFWs are provided with the essential training, mentorship, and technical support needed to establish technology-based enterprises; as a beneficiary of the iFWD PH program, Mr. Coronica founded Deo’s Aquaponic Farm, a sustainable agricultural venture that is now making waves in Tobias Fornier, Antique.

Recognizing a persistent gap in the local market, where freshwater fish like tilapia and hito (catfish) were often scarce and premium vegetables like lettuce were priced beyond the reach of ordinary households, Mr. Coronica saw an opportunity to serve his community.

The DOST iFWD PH program proved to be the turning point. Through the iFWD PH Business Development Training, Mr. Coronica was able to refine his childhood hobby of tending an aviary and fishpond into a scientific business model. He developed a comprehensive proposal for an aquaponic farm, which eventually secured the support needed to bring Deo’s Aquaponic Farm to life.

Today, located in Brgy. Masayo, Tobias Fornier in the province of Antique, the farm utilizes the Deep Water Culture (DWC) aquaponic system. This innovative method integrates aquaculture and hydroponics, allowing for efficient, environmentally sustainable food production. By using science and technology (S&T), the farm now provides a steady supply of fresh, locally produced catfish and leafy vegetables, significantly reducing the province’s reliance on external suppliers.

Beyond business success, Deo’s Aquaponic Farm represents Mr. Coronica’s commitment to his hometown. Through the integration of S&T provided by DOST, he has created a sustainable model for livelihood generation that inspires other OFWs to return home and invest in their own communities.

The journey of Deo’s Aquaponic Farm proves that when overseas experience meets local innovation, the impact is profound. Mr. Coronica’s story serves as an inspiration to fellow Filipinos working abroad, showing that with the right support from programs like DOST iFWD PH, they can transform their dreams into a lasting legacy of sustainability and growth.
