The Department of Science and Technology (DOST VI) through the Western Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology (WVCIEERD), in partnership with the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), facilitated a four-day training on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems completed by a total of 35 participants from the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), DOST VI, and WVCIEERD member institutions.
The PLC training engaged the Department of Science and Technology – Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) as the expert institution, led by Balik Scientist Dr. Albert J. Causo and Career Scientist Dr. Jayson Rogelio. It aimed to enhance the technical expertise and teaching competencies of faculty and researchers in Western Visayas in support of the region’s transition to Industry 4.0.
Dr. Causo introduced the CUATRO or Connected and Unified Autonomous Technologies and Automation and Robotics (CUATRO) Program, which seeks to prepare micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for Industry 4.0 while capacitating state universities and colleges (SUCs) to extend consultancy services to external clients. CUATRO Program aims to enhance the country’s capabilities in Industry 4.0. This R&D Program helps companies’ and institutions’ capabilities in utilizing core technologies such as additive manufacturing, autonomous robots, augmented reality, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, system integration, simulation, big data, and cloud computing.

On the other hand, Engr. Niel Mariano, Engr. Arnest Jerome Mojica, and Engr. Geoffrey Abulencia of DOST-MIRDC led the immersive exercises in both software and hardware programming which served as a masterclass in automation, bridging theory with hands-on application.
In addition, the Mozi Workshop Equipment was donated by the Liaoning Jianzhu Vocational College to ISATU. The equipment is a collection of tools and machinery, focused on intelligent manufacturing and vocational training, reflecting the technical and engineering skills associated with the ancient Chinese philosopher Mozi is expected to further strengthen instruction and applied research in advanced manufacturing technologies.
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Sancho Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Leah Buendia, and MIRDC Executive Director Robert O. Dizon had a quick visit to the training venue at ISATU, where they were able to view the training equipment.

This is one of the initiatives of Region VI to build a pool of skilled educators and researchers to help MSMEs and industries in Western Visayas embrace the opportunities of Industry 4.0. (MDEscaran/RDIMS)
