The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through its Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Sustainable Agriculture and Guided-Education for Indigenous People (SAGIP) Project, in partnership with the Capiz State University – Dumarao Satellite College (CAPSU), conducted two (2) vital community trainings focused on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and Solid Waste Management for the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of Aglalana on July 25, 2025 to strengthen resilience to natural disasters and promote environmental stewardship.

Recognizing that IP communities are among the most vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, typhoons, and earthquakes, the DRRM training aimed to equip IP participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation. Mr. Florencio A. Fariñas Jr., Head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Dumarao, led the DRRM training and introduced the key concepts including hazard identification, early warning systems, evacuation planning, and the importance of community-led preparedness in reducing disaster impacts.
The learning continued with a session on solid waste management facilitated by Ma. Lyn Loyola-Ronzalez, Section Head of the Environmental Management Service of the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CAPENRO). Participants learned to classify waste into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable categories, and were guided through sustainable waste disposal practices such as composting, recycling, and proper segregation. Hands-on activities, such as a waste-sorting exercise, made the sessions interactive and impactful. The training underscored the connection between environmental integrity and public health—particularly vital in rural and agricultural communities like Aglalana, where resource management is crucial to sustainable living.

With the successful conduct of these sessions, the IP community of Aglalana is now better prepared to respond to disasters and uphold responsible environmental practices. The initiative reflects CAPSU Dumarao and DOST’s continued commitment to inclusive development, resilience building, and environmental advocacy at the grassroots level.
