Western Visayas boasts a thriving food industry fueled by a network of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses are vital to the region’s economic growth. However, a key challenge they face is ensuring their products reach consumers in a fresh and appealing state.
High-quality packaging plays a critical role in an MSME’s success. It safeguards products from damage and spoilage, enhances their brand image and perceived value, and can even be a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Western Visayas.
Recognizing the need for a comprehensive packaging knowledge center, the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) partnered with Central Philippine University (CPU) on a crucial initiative.
On June 19, 2024, a momentous occasion took place – the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and turnover of project funds. This marks the official launch of the project titled “Strengthening the Packaging Technology Resource Center (PTRC) and Expanding Assistance for MSMEs in Western Visayas.”
Led by CPU’s College of Engineering – Packaging Engineering Department, this project will significantly enhance the capabilities of the PTRC and by providing MSMEs with access to expert consultation services, innovative packaging solutions, and advanced technical and laboratory assistance.
This MOA signing signifies a strong partnership between DOST VI and CPU, one built on a shared commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration. By further strengthening the PTRC, the project will empower MSMEs in Western Visayas to thrive, ensuring the continued success of the region’s vibrant food industry.
