R&D group in Western Visayas hosts data privacy training

The Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium-Research Ethics Committee (WVHRDC-REC) in partnership with Department of Science and Technology (DOST) VI conducted a Training on Data Privacy and Confidentiality via Zoom with REC members, researchers, and medical practitioners taking part.

As part of the WVHRDC’s initiatives, the training aims to enhance research capability, encourage resource sharing among institutions, and encourage dissemination and utilization of research results in Western Visayas. Moreover, the training course was designed for REC members in the region to help them understand data confidentiality and privacy when conducting ethics reviews.
Additionally, the activity aims to increase participants’ awareness of data risks and countermeasures, as well as the proper handling and management of research results.

The training was also a follow-up activity to the prior Good Clinical Practice Training conducted by WVHRDC-REC in January which briefly touched upon the concepts of data privacy and confidentiality.

Among the member institutions who attended are the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development, West Visayas State University (WVSU), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Iloilo Mission Hospital, Aklan State University (ASU), University of San Agustin (USA), Central Philippine University (CPU) Western Visayas Sanitarium and General Hospital, Western Visayas Medical Center, Colegio San Agustin Bacolod, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, and The Medical City Iloilo. Representatives from each aforementioned member institution comprise of a total of 32 participants.

Furthermore, Atty. Roberto P. Villanueva, M.D., Chair of WVHRDC-REC and the West Visayas State University-Unified Research Ethics Review Committee (WVSU-URERC), served as the training’s resource speaker.(KJRGagajena-DOSTVI/KMU)
